Quality as part of the Design Process
Many Industrial and Mechanical Designers overlook the product's critical to quality details/requirements during the initial design phase. When design and manufacturing are not taken into account at the beginning of the design phase, mistakes are often designed into a product which in turn, lengthens Time To Market (TTM)
Critical to quality items are not only the obvious mechanical fit requirements but the key performance indicators for the product.
For example, design of elastomeric button:
What is the average amount of times this button will be pressed over it's lifetime?
What is the environment for which the button will operate in?
What is the non-typical environment that this button could operate in?
What is the tactile feel required for the button - stiff release, soft release, etc?
What is the height requirement for button protrusion in the assembled state?
Inherently, quality is not the result of the manufacturing process, it is the detailed up front design work and manufacturing input that feed into your mechanical design and specification. By spending the time reviewing critical to quality part issues up front, the TTM for the product / piece part is significantly reduced. This collective approach to design also results in cost savings.
